Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is an ancient city located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka and is one of the island's most significant historical and cultural sites. It served as the capital of the country from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD and is home to some of the most important archaeological sites in the country. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins of palaces, temples, and monasteries, as well as giant Buddhist stupas, or dagobas, some of which are among the largest in the world. Highlights of Anuradhapura include the sacred Bodhi tree, which is believed to be the oldest recorded tree in the world, and the ancient irrigation system, which is still in use today. Anuradhapura is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
